It appeals to our 'up by the bootstraps' conditioning. We love the idea of having accomplished something on our own, with little more than willpower and a great idea. But despite its prevalence, DIY is a myth. Humans need connection to thrive. We can’t even grow our own food without collaboration from the seeds and the sun! (And if we are being honest, we usually rely on farmers and distributors, as well.)
Whether we think we like it or not (and I tend to like it), we’re dependent on one another. interdependence is the nature of reality and it wins the day over and over again.
When we build a bike or make the songs for a new album.
When we launch our next moves in business or art.
When we mine the depths of our unconscious beliefs to bring about understanding and changes - we do so because there are other people.
Our work and effort exist for others and with others.
Success and creation aside, there are also conflicts and conundrums that we cannot manage alone. As Sartre said, “Hell is other people,” but it is that hell, and those other people who provide us the proper (albeit sometimes hellish) impetus for change.
We need each other all the way up Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs; from food and shelter to emotional and self realization, and then back down again. Connection is required to help each other learn new languages and to share that learning with others. It is necessary to support and nurture their growth. I’m all for willpower and great ideas, but we can’t forget that accepting a helping hand along this journey of life is one of the best parts of being human.
According to the International Coach Federation via Forbes, “80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence, and over 70% benefit from improved work performance, relationships, and more effective communication skills.” But coaching doesn’t stop with sports. It expands to creative, professional and personal goals. Even if you are a creative. Especially if you are a creative.
We need mentors and other creatives. Even the most solo artistas need an audience and feedback at some moment in their process. These creatives also need a place where we can experiment and give ourselves permission to get it wrong (because as humans, we will get it wrong!)
Consultório is a space where you can get it wrong, get it right and make space for the unimaginable. And me? I’ll be your co-conspirator in creative crime.
After all, Robin had Batman.
The whole world has Oprah
Earth and Wind have Fire.
Skywalker had Obi Wan, Yoda AND Lea.
Now, you have me.
